Here's the story. I needed a new barber. Called a place in North Beach I've walked by often. Made an appointment and, as with most things these days, got a confirming text with link and profile pic. I learn my prospective barber is named after an Egyptian god of the underworld, has blue hair, and the cut costs $60. That seemed excessive to this Boomer so cancelled & went for a walk. On the way, just outside of Chinatown, I walk by a little hole-in-the-wall, two-chair barber shop on Pacific - "Yong Chang Hair Design". Looking in the window an Asian woman is gesturing to come inside. Why not? Her name is Helen. The haircut was 10 bucks. Quick, simple good haircut. Left a $5 tip and I've got a new barber.
$10 walk-in quick trim and fade- can’t beat that!
Used to be $6 and now $10 but regardless, about 2.5 to 3.5 times cheaper than other salons and once the lady cutting your hair know the basic about what you want, she does a good job. Same things for my wife who had her correct a so-so haircut from another salon or my 5 years old daughter. It just need to be simple/basic enough to explain or you can have a picture to show it.
Decent place. I ended up tipping 50% (which was a bit much in hindsight), but they didn't charge much (just $6). The barber was grabbing and pulling my hair out at times while cutting (which made it a bit painful at times) and it definitely wasn't a great haircut, but for $6 I couldn't expect any more. Wasn't personable as the ladies were talking in Cantonese with each other the whole time, but I could tell that they wanted to try their best despite the language barrier. All in all, I'd try out some other places in chinatown, but I may be back if need be.
Meh....subpar haircut. You get what you pay for I guess though I do tip well. Update to 1 star: Went back and the lady was guilting me into tipping her more. Give me a break. I gave a dollar more and won't be going back often (looking for another hair studio now and will only go back if absolutely necessary).
