The Sheridan Press

I read several old Google reviews stating that The Sheridan Press had become just a mouthpiece for the city of Sheridan. I’m hoping that The Press is once again baring its journalistic teeth. The Press has published articles and letters critical of Sheridan County’s approval process of a controversial 30,000 a year car factory. It recently (August 2023) published an article on Sheridan County residents’ critical reaction and outrage to the County Commission’s failure to fill a vacancy, as required by state statute. Such journalism is an important and necessary asset for our small town.

Small town paper seems to be doing a better job of reporting local news. The publisher has lived in various places, and brings an awareness of the importance for getting stories right. I was impressed that he took a lunch hour class on Wyoming's Political Identity. Taught by the dean of living Wyoming Professors, the class was a lively discussion orchestrated by Pete Simpson. Several new young writers & photographers with good skills are honing their craft. I'm back as a subscriber because I like what I'm seeing.

I have the feeling the SP is more of a propaganda rag for the city itself, and Sheridan College. It is loathe to feature any story which doesn't fit the image it wants to promote: all rainbows and unicorns. I believe it tosses well -written but negative letters about certain pet projects favored by the cabal. But I have no proof. It was once a great little award-winning paper 30 years ago, with fabulous photography and a sense of humor.

Perhaps not the best newspaper, but residents of Sheridan County should support their local paper.
