Here's my single best NYC tip: go to Twigs and get a cut from Ruthie Hummel. She's super friendly, very communicative, very creative and talented! The first time I saw her, I went in with only a vague idea of what I wanted and came out with the best haircut of my life. It's been just as good every other time, too. My two favorite things about Ruthie, apart from the sheer genius of her cuts, is that she's very easy to talk to, and will also do in-between trims for $15. Such a bargain.

Julie is amazing! Julie is one of the founders of Twigs, and I will not let anyone else touch my hair. I send everyone to her, and even my mom is now a loyal customer. Julie can work on any hair--fine and wavy (like mine), thick and curly, short, long. She is a miracle worker, and she will teach you how to best care for your hair.
