When I first arrived in Austin from South Carolina, one of the first "Austin" experiences I had was the pleasure of participating in a group exhibit at Co-Lab. In a way, I felt validated in my decision to move, as I had never encountered a similar "open" gallery that would not only allow applications for shows on a rolling basis, but also have so few restrictions on the style of the work on exhibit. Co-Lab continues its mission to promote the existence of open spaces for Artists to work in without attaching the possible "stigma" of a normal museum. Certain works even benefit from being shown in Co-Lab, as it's hard to picture them on display anywhere else other than the artists' studio. I know I'll be going tonight, but shouldn't you at least give Co-Lab a try? You might like it so much,

Co-Lab is my favorite art gallery in Austin. They host some of the most compelling work and throw amazing openings. Now with the newly improved bar area, this place is absolutely amazing. Make sure to purchase a mug every year, before they sell out. The benefactor mugs allow you to drink for free all year long, and all proceeds go to helping Co-lab host amazing shows. Just make sure to tip your friendly bartender.

I went to this space while the sketchbook project was in Austin. It's a smaller garage with a small bar area (I think they sold water while I was there) in back. It's a pretty cool place and they seem to have various exhibits throughout the year!

This is a thought-provoking space pregnant with possibility. I attended the Shawn Camp installation and was immediately blown away. The piece was a time lapse look at twenty four hours in a remote area of Alberta, Canada. And the artist symbolically transported the spectators that place in time. I can't wait to go back to see what other creations the participating artists have in store.
