Kya African Hair Braiding

I’ve had so many bad experiences with African hair braiding salons, and I was a little apprehensive about going to this salon. Mary did not disappoint. She did an amazing job! My appointment was at 8:00 and I was done by 3:00. She is professional and meticulous about her work. She has such a sweet spirit. She is my new hair braiding lady.

I chose this stylist based on glowing 5-star reviews, but unfortunately, my experience was far from that—and frankly, disappointing. She claims to have 22 years of experience in braiding, but you can judge for yourself from the photos and video. My style was supposed to be micro braids, and just 4 days later, it looked fuzzy, messy, and rushed. Even my Caucasian friend—who doesn’t know much about braids—commented on how fuzzy they looked. That says a lot. I told her multiple times that my scalp is sensitive and I don’t like tight braids, but she ignored my concerns. Instead of adjusting her technique, she repeatedly brought up how long she's been in the business. As a result, my neck and scalp broke out in painful bumps from how tightly she pulled and twisted the hair. There were several

I absolutely love my hair. She really knows what she’s doing and I’m very pleased. The pricing was fair. She does work out of her home. I had a hard time finding any reviews that mentioned this. I didn’t love that her work space is in her home. At some ponts during my service, her family members were watching tv/videos quite loud and made it difficult for me to focus on my book and relax. Personally it wouldn’t have bothered me if it weren’t so loud. It would’ve been nice if there was a separate room she worked in instead of the living room with the tv/near the kitchen so her family wouldn’t be disturbed and so her clients wouldn't be disturbed. It definitely wasn’t a deal breaker for me though.. just wanted to mention this as I know salon settings are important to some people. The service

I can't say enough good things about this place! This was one of the best experiences I've had! I was able to get a same day appt for medium knotless box braids. She even mixed a hair color for me that is so pretty 🥹. Ms. Mary is so nice, I immediately felt comfortable and calmwalking in. She didn't braid too tightly at all and is not heavy handed. It took about 4-5 hrs and best of all the work is great quality and the price is more than fair!! I will be returning! Highly recommended!

Maria does such phenomenal job braiding my hair! I always go to her for my individual braids. I’ve never been disappointed with her work! I have been going to her for a years now and she always does such a great job. I get so many compliments when she does my hair. She braids fast, tight, and neat. I would definitely recommend Kya Hair Braiding in Durham.
