Avenue Hair

My 6 year old daughter and I both get our hair cut here. The facility / chairs / decor here are old (no frills!) but the cuts and staff are great. I especially appreciated that they have signs posted that the stylists will wear face masks upon request. When our stylist saw that we were wearing masks, she offered to put hers on before we even asked! Please note that they only accept payments by CASH or CHECK. They do have an ATM onsite in case you forget (which I often do).

My kids, husband, and in-laws have been going to Avenue Hair for decades. I had been sticking to my fancy salons, but decided to try out Gaby at Avenue, because I loved how she cut my MIL’s hair. So worth it! Not only is Avenue a fraction of the fancy salon price, but for the first time ever someone random off the street came up to me to take pics of my hair because they wanted a similar cut. True story!

I took my kid here, off and on, for over 8 years. We'd both get cuts, he'd get a lollypop, everyone was very nice. I should that I used to take my kid here. Today, Teri couldn't seem to understand that I wanted to get a short haircut, but still walk out with hair actually on my head when I left. After 40 mins dithering around, and me encouraging her to actually cut my hair, she wound up basically shaving me totally bald. While I was leaving, one stylist said, "You still look handsome..." Teri reminded me about how fast hair grows in the summer. Which are 2 of the last thing you want to hear when your leaving a 'barbershop'. There are at least 50 other places to get your hair cut in Evanston. You should go to one of the other 49.

Is it weird to say " I love getting a haircut?" I have been going to Avenue Hair for years, and wouldn't go anywhere else. I get my hair cut by John, the owner. He is an expert barber - happy to do whatever you want, but skilled enough to make suggestions that make sense. We have experimented with traditional cuts and more modern styles. And while I always go to John, I find everyone who works there is super friendly and welcoming. Almost like the TV show "Cheers" - where everybody knows your name! Great haircut at a great price (Men under $30 and Women under $40!) at a great place with a great vibe. Can't go wrong! Best deal in town!

I don’t usually write reviews, but Avenue Hair in Evanston deserves a shoutout. First of all, the vibe in there is great - stylish without being snobby, chill without feeling like nobody cares. It’s the sweet spot. An iconic place in the Northshore, really. My girl Sharon actually listened to what I wanted, asked thoughtful questions, and didn’t just nod and then do whatever she felt like - major points for that. The whole appointment felt relaxed but super intentional. I left with a cut that made me feel like a better, more put-together version of myself. My hair was bouncy. My confidence was up. I texted like three friends immediately, “YOU need to come here.” You’re not just a name on a list they really take their time and make sure you’re happy with everything. So yeah, 10/10 experienc
